AUGUST 11, 2026
the subway knows uptown from downtown. every train now wears a small arrow — up for uptown (northbound), down for downtown — and all 496 stations sit on their lines as pale dots that grow as you zoom in; hover a dot for the station's name.
the subway, three times fresher. train positions now refresh every 5 seconds instead of 15 — the page polls faster and the network holds each answer for a third as long, so a train on the map runs at most ~10 seconds behind the mta's feed instead of ~30.
the subway answers without the slash. chall.net/subway (no trailing slash) served the page but its scripts resolved against the site root and 404'd — black screen, no map. asset paths are now absolute; both spellings of the address work.
THE SUBWAY — every train, live. a live map of the nyc subway at /subway: every train in the system placed on the city in real time from the mta's gtfs-realtime feeds, refreshed every 15 seconds. a hand-rolled zero-dependency protobuf decoder in a vercel function (verified byte-exact against the reference library on all 8 feeds), each train interpolated between its last and next station along official track geometry, official line colors, hover a train for its direction, next stop and eta. adversarial review before ship killed the 3am phantom-train bug (38% of the overnight map was trains that hadn't left the yard) and the daily trip-id ghost collision.
THE SALON — a rotating hanging of the public domain. a screensaver of masterpieces at salon.chall.net: 263 public-domain works from the open collections of eleven museums, hung in gold gilded frames on a wall that follows the sun — paper by day, near-black after dark. one work at a time or a wall of three; ten rooms, from vermeer's delft to hokusai's wave, a storm room, jamaica 1778–1890, and hammershøi's quiet copenhagen. brass-plate captions, a seeded daily hanging, keeps working offline once visited. every image verified against its museum's own open-access api at bake time; no keys, no tracking, one self-contained file.
AUGUST 8, 2026
THE DRIFT — sumi performs itself. press A (or the dock's drift, or arrive via ?drift) and a conductor composes the instrument's own gestures — ring blooms, brush script, comb rakes, fan sweeps, rain — through a programmed hand riding the same stroke physics as yours. it dwells about a minute in each water, then dissolves to the next; every scene visits before any repeats, and light-to-dark crossings take a slow three-second door. while drifting the bath is stiller so inks hold and each scene ends developed. touch the water and the drift ends: the brush is yours.
sumi speaks english, answers only the hand. all chrome in english (no more kanji), and the water only moves when you click and drag — hovering leaves it perfectly still.
SUMI — the floating world. a dedicated suminagashi instrument at sumi.chall.net: seven waters, real marbling tools including the comb, ink wells with a color picker, pulled prints, seeded shareable pours, 120fps on apple silicon. one self-contained file.
AUGUST 8, 2026
chall tunnel. a live wind tunnel opens at tunnel.chall.net — a real flow solver under real airframes, in one self-contained file . drag the plane, find the stall, print the plate . every number is measured in front of you or cited to the flight manual — the gap between the two is the lesson.
AUGUST 7, 2026
about, off google's clock. the two typefaces on the about page now ship from chall.net itself instead of google's servers, so the page no longer waits on a stylesheet from another company — and the two extra lookups behind it — before it can draw a single word . first paint lands about 19% sooner on a slow connection and the real lettering settles roughly twice as fast . same font files, same open licence, and not one pixel of the page moved.
forest hill stops re-downloading its own timeline. the three portrait circles on the master timeline were quietly pulling three full archival photographs — 940kb — on every single visit, including return visits, to paint three coin-sized cutouts . they now use 188-pixel thumbnails (26kb for all three), and the opening photograph ships at the size your screen actually renders it . same pictures, same page.
spiritwatch, style locked. the chase formation now flies with four clear, double-resolution airframes — a true three-point double-w b-2, its exact moonlit repaint, twin-tail f-22 escorts, and a two-engine kc-46 with the boom stowed . the whole flight stays together on phones, fullscreen keeps its controls, and the watch now runs cooler, pauses cleanly, and reads better to assistive tech.
lighter pages. the about portrait now ships as avif/webp at the size it renders (334kb down to ~33–52kb), the social card slimmed 39%, forest hill loads only the slide you are on (≈11.4mb → ≈1.2mb cold) with a 95% lighter housing-proposal rendering and a webp clubhouse, and images cache for a day at the edge . every pixel looks the same.
spiritwatch flies forward. the camera moves to where watchkeeper keeps it — behind and above her own . the b-2 runs away from you toward the horizon with a raptor off each wing, the sea rolls up at the camera, clouds swell past the formation, the tanker takes the lead ahead-above . chase-view airframes are interim until the painted set lands.
spiritwatch. the watchkeeper gets a sibling at 40,000 feet — a b-2 spirit and two raptor escorts hold the long watch over the same pixel ocean at /spiritwatch . the house sky camera and painted art, a seeded world with a real-phase moon and wheeling constellations, ~40 events from fuel checks to boom refueling and sam launches that lose the ghost, an rwr scope that sees them coming, and the quiet mission-log voice . one self-contained file.
AUGUST 5, 2026
chall park. a pocket roller coaster tycoon opens at park.chall.net — isometric lawn, footpaths, six flat rides, stalls, and a piece-by-piece coaster builder whose auto-complete always finds its way home . guests wander in with needs and thoughts, the bank never runs dry (fun mode), and the park autosaves in the browser . one self-contained file: bright rct2 heart, ink-on-paper chrome.
the changelog grows up. this page rebuilt as a real changelog — releases grouped by day, each with a version, a tag (new · improved · fixed), its pacific ship time, and a plain description . unversioned pushes now appear as line items under the release they shipped on . restores v1.6.1, which the old page skipped.
the page ends quietly. removed the hairline rule above the version badge in the footer.
timeline, uninterrupted. removed the long horizontal rule after the timeline heading.
AUGUST 4, 2026
the paper stands alone. the display selector retires — grunge, crt, and the zen garden come off the public page . the default ink-on-paper look is the only look (the garden is replanted at admin.chall.net).
the zen garden. a sumi-e ink tree takes the third display slot — grows in over nine seconds, cycles through four seasons in seven minutes, sheds leaves that drift down the margins and pile at the foot of the page . reduced motion gets a still summer painting . retired in v1.22.0.
two transmissions. grunge paper and monochrome crt become switchable themes behind a display selector — persists locally, accepts ?theme=grunge|hacker.
- 11:18 pmfix: keep the selector visible at the top right
- 11:24 pmreverted — the original v1.19 paper restored . the selector itself retires in v1.22.0

back to the paper. the attack-center easter egg, dark mode, aurora wash, lamp, and theme toggle are all retired . no animation, no scroll tricks . white by default — just the ink and the timeline.
the screen becomes real. the site mapped onto the attack center's display with a true perspective fit (a trapezoid, not a rectangle), photo-registered edge feathering, and the room's optical softness . landing no longer off-center.
the attack center goes wordless. brand line and scroll hint removed from the easter egg — just the room.
the masthead is gone. the page opens straight on CHRIS HALL . the attack center becomes an easter egg — scroll up past the top and the camera pulls back to the big board . ☾ toggle floats free.
